New Android Apps you must know

FEATURED APPS

The tap-and-drag interface looks good on both tablets and phones, and users can import calendars from Google, Facebook, Exchange, Outlook, and other sources via the built-in guide. The full app is $2, but there's a free version that excludes color-coded calendars and the mini-month view. Other calendars for sports and holidays are available via in-app purchases.

Helpouts

Helpouts has been a long time coming, but now that it's available, you won't find Android wanting for an applicable app. Most of the current offerings are fairly simple live video sessions for instruction in everything from guitar lessons to tech support, with integrated payments right in the app. The app itself is typically Google: attractive, if a little Spartan. As usual, support outside of the US is spotty at best this soon after the service launch.

--

Helpouts connects people who need help with people who can give help over live video. Download the Helpouts app today to get help across multiple topics with your mobile device anytime, anywhere

CyanogenMod Installer

The CyanogenMod team is trying their darndest to extend an already impressive userbase, and the CM installer is the first step in accomplishing that laudable goal. Combined with the Windows desktop client, this step-by-step guide will get you running everyone's favorite custom ROM faster than you can say Jack Robinson. Naturally device support is limited to those phones and tablets that have CM builds and fairly straightforward root and unlock methods - mostly Nexus and Samsung devices at the moment.

--

Companion application for the CyanogenMod Installer. Following this process will provide your device with the latest version of CyanogenMod, an Android OS made for you, the users. For a list of currently supported devices, please see our Supported Devices page: http://goo.gl/GQbfRf Please note: Currently the installation process requires a Windows PC to complete. We are working on OSX support.

Dayframe (Android photo frame)

Dayframe is an app that makes your tablet one of those WiFi digital photo frames.... wait, come back! It's way more interesting than it sounds. Instead of showing pictures of your boring family, the app pulls down photos from Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr and the like (and fine, it can show local images too) for beautiful and category-driven slideshow. A ton of power and customization features round out the app, and it can even work as a rudimentary launcher if you use your tablet as a desktop mini-display.

--

Dayframe turns your device into a fun and powerful new photo frame. Dayframe works with your favorite photo sharing services to provide a ongoing slideshow of friends, family, and interests. Browse and share photos between Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Google+, Dropbox, Flickr, Twitter, 500px, and more. Dayframe is designed to automatically play when you’re not using your device. Once you’re set up, that’s it. Dayframe takes care of everything.

SolCalendar - Android Calendar

SolCalendar is a beautiful alternative to the standard Android/Google calendar, and not just because of its functional interface or pastel color scheme. This app actually makes good use of the cutesy sticker feature, letting you easily spot important days and events at a glance. Even the homescreen widget (an essential for any calendar app) is drop-dead gorgeous. Not a Google Calendar user? No fear: the app will sync with any CalDev compatible platform.

--

Let your Google calendar be perfect. SolCalendar will turn your calendar into a thing of beauty. It was introduced as one of the '30 of the most beautiful and well-designed Android apps' by The Next Web. SolCalendar works with all the calendars you've already got on your phone and the other calendars which support CalDAV like as Yahoo., Daum as well. It's completely free.

Camera Awesome

Camera Awesome might just be the best combination of photo app and editor available. After getting an enviable amount of users on iOS, SmugMug's official editor app is now available on Android, complete with a surprisingly intuitive interface (even if it is an iOS copy) and a ton of filters and editing options. Once you're finished messing with your shot, you can upload it to basically every popular social and photo site. Got a Tegra 4 machine? Then you've also got access to stylus support, slo-mo video, and enhanced HDR.

--

Take better photos with your smartphone. SmugMug’s Camera Awesome, with 20+ million downloads on iOS, “actually helps you take better pictures” (TechCrunch: Best Apps of 2012). Just released on Android. Pack your phone with pro features and get more creative control with the following standard and exclusive Android features:

SeatGeek Event Tickets

SeatGeek is sort of the Kayak of event apps - it scours eBay, StubHub, and TicketsNow for seats at sporting events, concerts, and what have you. Even better, it includes the location of wherever the ticket is (assuming that the seating chart for the venue is available), which is something that even the best sites have yet to master. All in all, it's a great place to start if you're looking for aftermarket tickets... though you might give your local Craigslist hub a gander as well.

--

SeatGeek is a search engine for tickets that scours hundreds of websites at once – from big sites like StubHub, TicketsNow and eBay down to individual brokers – to help you find the absolute best deals on sports, concert and live events. SeatGeek ranks all ticket deals with a 1-to-100 Deal Score, so you can quickly find the tickets with the most bang for your buck. SeatGeek's interactive seating charts make it easy to pick exactly where you’d like to sit, and the app's view-from-seat photos let you know exactly what you’ll see when you get to the event.

FCC Speed Test

Yeah, yeah, giving information over to the government might seem a little ill-advised given current events. But this app is specifically designed to give the FCC an accurate picture of voice and data coverage across the country and on all relevant carriers, which is surely something I can get behind. ("Fair" coverage does not mean zero bars, T-Mobile.) You can also track your own results. If you're wondering, the app only polls your signal and data speed, with no personal information sent to the Commission.

--

What does it do? The FCC Speed Test app accurately measures your mobile broadband performance and displays an in-depth view of its factors (e.g. download and upload speed, latency, and packet loss). Why download it? Learn about your mobile broadband performance in one click. Track it over time. What about privacy? No personally-identifiable information is collected whatsoever. Testing is totally anonymous.

Google Opinion Rewards

Excuse me sir, do you have time to answer a few questions to help us improve our website? Of course you don't. That's why Google likes to incentivize user feedback with good old-fashioned money. Not a lot, mind you - it's not as if answering a few consumer-oriented questions requires a degree or anything - but you can earn a few bucks of Google Play credit by answering some short, targeted questions via this single-purpose app.

--

Answer quick surveys and earn Google Play credits with Google Opinion Rewards, an app created by Google Consumer Surveys. Getting started is easy. Download the app and answer answer basic questions about yourself. About once a week you'll get a notification on your phone that a short and relevant survey is ready for you. Questions will range from, "Which logo is best?" and "Which promotion is most compelling?" to "When do you plan on traveling next?"

LEGO® TV

If you're a parent, you probably know that Lego's empire is not limited to toys. They've expanded into video games, clothing, and even direct-to-video movies. Surprisingly, Lego is now allowing kids to watch these videos for free (though really it's just a wrapper for the YouTube channel). Got a long car trip on the horizon? No problem - the app lets you download videos to local storage. Because playing with real Legos in the back seat is asking for a lost 2x3.

--

Watch your favorite LEGO® movies directly on your device. This app allows you to watch LEGO movies in both online and offline mode. You can download your favorite LEGO movies to your device and watch them whenever you like.

This app features two main areas:
- LEGO Movies streamed from the official LEGO YouTube Channel
- LEGO Movies for download to your device

Streambels AirPlay/DLNA Player

Non-compatible standards suck. Streambels makes them suck a little bit less, at least if the ones you're using are AirPlay or DLNA. The app will stream audio or video to any DLNA or AirPlay receiver (including AppleTV), along with XBMC and Raspbmc. If that's not enough, it's also got a fantastic interface, complete with a handful of themes. You can stream video from YouTube or Facebook, but everything else will need to be stored locally.

--

Stream local and online music, videos and photos from your Android to any AirPlay or DLNA device. Streambels beams the media content in the same way as the Apple AirPlay, making it fully compatible with AirPlay wireless speakers such as Bose, Sony, Pure, Denon, Pioneer and others. The app works smoothly with Apple TV, AirPort Express and any other AirPlay-enabled devices. With integrated DLNA support you can stream freely to Samsung TVs, Sony TVs, LG TVs, Xiaomi Box and other DLNA-enabled popular receivers.

Drink Advisor

The nightlife scene is in constant flux in any major city - services like Yelp are built on helping users to navigate the shifting waters of adult entertainment. Drink Advisor takes out the community component and offers semi-professional advice for bars and clubs in over 120 cities. An appropriately trendy UI and the usual social sharing tools help augment the experience. Low on funds? No worries - Drink Advisor includes cocktail recipes for a night in.

--
Find the hottest nightspots near you, right now, anywhere in the world, with the ultimate bar and club guide for your mobile. DrinkAdvisor is packed with up-to-the-minute information on over 3000 venues in more than 120 cities. DrinkAdvisor brings you the latest reviews and ratings from real users, which means you can rely on it to give you the very best advice on what’s hot in your city. Whether you’re in London, New York, Paris or Moscow, DrinkAdvisor helps you quickly and easily find the most exciting nightlife nearby.

Snapy, The Floating Camera

It's hard to imagine a scenario where taking a photo doesn't demand your full attention, or at least your full screen. But if you frequently find yourself in need of a snapshot without closing another app, then Snapy is for you. You can move the floating camera window around and resize it if necessary. Launch it from a floating icon, notification, or shortcut, and you'll never need to close... whatever else it is that you're doing.

--

meet SNAPY, THE FLOATING CAMERA.

Never miss a big moment again, it has never been that easy...

A FLOATING CAMERA?
SNAPY can be launched from any app or game, at anytime, with just a single tap. SNAPY is a resizable, movable & adjustable camera that's always there.

WHY FLOATING CAMERA?
Launch snapy with one tap. That's it. Playing a game while the baby makes it's first steps? It's alright. Snap it with SNAPY. On the phone while a cute dog passes by? No problem.. Snap it with SNAPY. Writing an email & all of a sudden there's an alien invasion?! It's OK. Snap it with SNAPY.

500 Firepaper

This app replaces your static Android wallpaper with a rotating selection of entries on 500px. If you want something interesting behind your icons and widgets without the battery-draining drawback of a live wallpaper, this is it. The settings let you set an update interval, but unfortunately, 500px terms will keep you from saving individual pictures or keeping the same wallpaper for more than one day.

--

500 Firepaper provides a live wallpaper and a daydream showing you the latest images from 500px throughout the day. You never need to look at that boring old wallpaper again, or search for hours for a nice new one. This app will show you quality photographs from all over the world - different ones each day. The feature (popular, editor's choice, fresh, etc) and categories displayed are of course configurable, as is the refresh interval and the brightness of the images.

Sleep Genius: + Revive Alarm

SleepGenius aims to help you fall asleep quickly and stay asleep longer. I don't know if their claims of scientifically-tuned noise holds any water, but the app delivers the features that a lot of people swear by and some nifty power nap and timed alarm functions as well. Early reviews are positive, so I'd be willing to venture a buck on a download.

--

Decades of sleep research have produced a sleep app that's better than white noise and other natural sleeping aids. The proprietary algorithms in Sleep Genius actually help your brain get ready for sleep, guide your brain through each stage in the sleep cycle, and wake you with a gentle, refreshing alarm. Perfect if you have anxiety or stress and struggle winding down before bed, can’t sleep, suffer from sleep deprivation, or just looking for a better quality sleep.

Bundlr

Bundlr is yet another take on the alternative news engine, this time revolving around "clips" - basically, series of links to videos and stories. It's a sort of mix between a Twitter-powered reader and a bookmark app. Whether it's necessary or indeed useful is debatable, but at least the app is clean and functional. Naturally there's a large selection of sharable options for each user.

--

Bundlr is a new and free tool to collect everything about your favorite topics. Bring together photos, videos, tweets and documents on the go. Share them with everyone.
Create bundles about your favorite topics
Clip content to your bundles by copying the URL from Safari
Manage the content you have on bundlr.com
Share clips on social networks or by sms and mail

Each bundle has its own public webpage, accessible on bundlr.com

SquareHub

Some of us prefer to avoid our immediate family on social networks (no, Mom, I'm not friending you back) but it's hard to deny the advantages therein. For that extremely specific user scenario, there's SquareHub, a social network designed just for families. It's more like a refrigerator whiteboard than anything else, with messages, posts, and announcements catered towards family planning. A people-tracker feature is a nice bonus for parents.

--

SquareHub is the private social network that makes everyday communication fun and functional for everyone in your family. Send private messages and photos, coordinate activities, manage schedules, and share those spontaneous moments of joy with just your family. Whether you’re a family with young kids, mobile teenagers, kids away at college, or you’re a family living in multiple locations, SquareHub makes it easy for everyone in your family to stay connected.

Poshmark - Buy & Sell Fashion

Imagine Poshmark as a sort of Swappa for clothes. As someone who shops exclusively from the Sam Walton collection, my duds probably aren't worth any more than the change in my pocket, but those of you with more discriminating tastes might be able to sell more lucrative clothing and accessories. The app lets you list items without a PC, and naturally you can buy things as well.

--

Poshmark is a fun and simple way to buy and sell fashion. Shop the closets of women across America - and sell yours too. Ever wish you could shop a fashion lover's closet? Now you can. Poshmark connects you to people whose style you adore, allowing you to shop their closets anytime you’d like. Best part? Scoring awesome deals on great merchandise. Do you have items in your closet that you love, but just aren’t IN love with anymore? That designer handbag, sequin dress, or statement necklace you wore once and probably won’t ever wear again? Sell them on Poshmark in a just a few clicks.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

When it comes to wholesome family entertainment, you can't do much better than good ol' Charlie Brown. The Thanksgiving version of Loud Crow's well-known children's book apps includes the typically scenes from the classic TV special, with a more video-focused take on the activities and reading. A "For Parents" area lets you adjust settings without worrying about what the kids can get into.

--

“Where’s the turkey, Chuck?” This holiday season, join Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang around the table for a (very.) unique Thanksgiving dinner. From pilgrims to popcorn, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving comes to life in this beautifully re-mastered 40th anniversary edition. Magically marrying a book-like feel with clever interactive elements, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will leave your senses hungry for a second helping.

PassWallet - Password Manager

Today's roundup is brought to you by PassWallet (formerly Password Wallet) by HandyApps. Passwords are hard, thanks to the thousands of logins required for modern digital living. Sure, you could have the same passcode for every service, if you enjoy throwing your life into chaos when you lose your phone or get your identity stolen. HandyApps' PassWallet puts all your passwords behind a single PIN, with 256-bit encryption, floating windows for easy copying, cloud sync, a stealth mode, and entries for just about any information you could want. With this app, there's no reason to be anything less than safe. The app below is a 30-day trial - the full version is a one-time purchase of $4.99.

PassWallet is a password manager app that safely and securely stores your most sensitive data conveniently in your mobile phone or tablet. We believe PassWallet to be the most stealthy, most secure and most convenient password manager ever developed for the Android smartphones and tablets! Timely Alarm Clock

Why does an alarm clock app need to look good? It doesn't - but Timely does anyway, and includes tons of features to boot. Between the swipe-based interface, a ton of visual themes and customizations, multiple snooze modes, widgets, integration with Google Now and DashClock, and more, it's easily the fancy-pantsiest alarm clock available for Android. The app is free to download, then switches to an ad-supported model after five days with an in-app purchase ad-free option.

--

Timely is the beautiful Alarm Clock for Android, featuring a stunning user experience and revolutionary cloud integration to backup and synchronize your alarms with multiple devices. Beautiful wake-up experience: Hand-crafted, high quality sounds and our innovative Smart Rise feature transform waking up in the morning into pure delight.

NicePlayer BETA

There's only so much that a music player can do to stand out from the pack. You can try to add a ton of features, like Music Player (Remix), or you can go for the pretty, like NicePlayer. This unconventional music app incorporates Google's card UI system in a big way, mixing the standard player functions with a file browser for music management. It's certainly unique, though whether it's better than a more typical UI or not is up to you.

--

Enjoy your Music. NicePlayer is a Modern App that just let you play your music. Everything is just here, and ready to be played.

Buy Me a Pie! Grocery List

To-do list apps aren't exactly hard to come by, but Buy Me A Pie! has a huge following on iOS thanks to its swanky interface and an interesting learning dictionary mechanic. Put in some non-standard words (like, say, Jardine Salsa) and Buy Me A Pie! will learn it and save it for future lists. The paid version adds cross-platform cloud syncing, multiple lists, and easy sharing for just a buck at the time of writing.

--

Buy Me a Pie! is the handiest and easiest to use shopping list app with synchronization. Forget paper shopping lists and overcomplicated applications. With Buy Me a Pie!, you will love shopping. One of the best shopping list apps in the world that has already won the hearts of 3 million people worldwide is now available for Android.

HabitRPG

If you do something long enough, it becomes a habit - for better or worse. This sort of thinking is what drives HabitRPG, an app that tries to make positive activities into a role-playing game. It's an interesting idea, but in order for it to work you'll have to be your own dungeon master, so to speak. Reviewer Bertel King, Jr. found it to be more frustrating than useful, but pen-and-paper RPG types might find a lot to like.

--

Habit RPG is a habit-building program which treats your life like a Role Playing Game. Level up as you succeed, lose HP as you fail, earn money to buy weapons and armor, compete with your friends. https://habitrpg.com (the website) has been around for about one year, and has additional features such as guilds, parties, pets, random drops, tags, difficulty settings, etc. We're going to be pulling in features bit-by-bit into the mobile app - but we wanted to get this initial release out there so people can start using it, and hopefully contributing.

FreshBooks Cloud Accounting

Freshbooks has been a favorite of small businesses for years. It's a simple, cloud-connected platform for tracking billable time, expenses, and invoices, best suited to small teams or contractors. The service took its sweet time releasing an Android app, but now that it's here, there are more than a few GMs that will be happy to have easy access to their Freshbooks account without having to dig through a mobile browser. Accounts for individuals are free, but businesses will have to pay extra.

--

Clipless

There are a plethora of deal hunter apps available for Android from all kinds of sources, but you can never save enough money, so here's another one. This one focuses on retail stores in your local area, so there's no need to hunt down online savings and wait for the shipping. Deals are displayed in maps and show up in your notifications, and you can set both the frequency and the range of the alerts.

--

Discover new deals and coupons near you with Clipless. There are tons of deals out there, but *finding* them is a challenge. With Clipless, you'll never miss a deal again. Clipless is a "contextual" deal locator that follows you around and alerts you when discounts are offered at places that you're actually at, using low-power location services to keep your battery happy. Use it to find deals near you at a single point in time, or put it into the background and let it roam with you

Way2ride

There are a ton of digital taxi services these days (and cabbies all hate them, and do you have to pay with a credit card sir, I really prefer cash), but Way2Ride might just be the most exciting. In addition to the standard hailing function, it's got maps, annotated receipts, and other tracking tools. Best of all, it includes a function that calls your cab if you leave something in the car... which admittedly isn't much help if the thing that you leave is your phone. Way2Ride is only available in NYC at the moment.

--

Just get in. Tap. And get out. It’s that easy. With the Way2ride taxi app now available in New York City, there’s no more fumbling for your wallet to pay at the end of the ride. Just scan a credit card, set your tip preference, and you’re ready to ride. Whether you hail with your hand, or hail with an app, all it takes is a single tap at the beginning of your ride is. All your receipts are saved in the Way2ride app and online, with a map of your route, tags, and other tools for submitting expenses

avast! Mobile Backup

Avast is best known for their anti-virus software, but backup fits nicely in the security wheelhouse, so they've offered an app for that as well. The free Mobile Backup App will preserve your contacts, SMS log, call log, and photos, but if you want music, video, and apps backed up, you'll have to pay. Data is sent to Avast's servers on your account, so restoring from a backup should be easy (and crucially, it won't depend on your local hardware).

--

Backup your Android phone and tablet. Otherwise, all your accumulated contacts, music, videos, family photos, and other personal (irreplaceable) data are dangerously kept on a device with only temporary life. Back them up to secure, cloud-based servers, so you can relax about theft and/or accidental damage (e.g. a spilled cup of coffee).

The app backs up:
Contacts
SMS
Call logs
Photos
Music (premium)
Videos (premium)
